MPD essays
MPD essays Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) was first recognized and described by the French physician Pierre Janet in the late 19th century. The disorder is a very rare psychological disorder in which a person has two or more distinct personalities, each one with its own thoughts, feelings, and patterns of behaviour. The personalities are often direct opposites and dominate at different times, with abrupt changes triggered by events or memories. The cause of MPD is not clearly understood, but the condition seems to be associated with severe physical abuse and neglect in childhood. MPD often occurs in childhood, but may not be recognized until much later. It has two main causes. The first is a capacity for profound dissociated; in fact, MPD patients tend to be hypnotizable. The second is a history of childhood trauma, mostly a combination of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. An MPD patient is very much in touch with reality. However, if the patient does not want to face reality, they can escape that through dissociation, 1 in which the host (the original personality- see glossary for more details) is able to avoid experiencing or dealing with an intolerable episode by turning it over to an alter (an alternate personality- #see glossary for more details) who lives through those experiences instead of the host. Dissociation might initially have been used as a defense against what the patient found to be trauma or abuse. A large majority of MPD patients report a history of abuse, and a majority of those report instances of incest. Also, another frequently reported trauma is witnessing a violent death. At least three-quarters of known cases of MPD report personalities that are under the age of twelve. Alters tend to come out when the host cannot deal with memories or thoughts associated with the abuse earlier on in his or her life. The number of alters that an MPD patient has ranges anywhe ...

Hack, Hacker and Hacking
Hack, Hacker and Hacking Hack, Hacker and Hacking Hack, Hacker and Hacking By Maeve Maddox A reader is puzzled by a new permutation of the word hack: The word hack, until recently, meant to break into someones Internet account or system. Now I see it meaning tips or suggestions. à Am I correct? Like this reader, the only meaning that hack held for me in regard to computers was as a verb meaning ââ¬Å"to illegally enter a computer system.â⬠I too was surprised to come across headlines like the following: 100 Life Hacks That Make Life Easier 23 Inventive Hacks That Every Parent Should Know Millennials Are Ditching Delivery for This Dinner Hack Best Travel Hacks 17 Thanksgiving Hacks For The Best Meal Of Your Life How did hack go from ââ¬Å"illegal computer activityâ⬠to ââ¬Å"a tip for making things easier to doâ⬠? Looking a little further, I find that hack and hacking to connote only malicious unauthorized access to computer files may reflect general usage, but not that of programmers who are proud to be known as ââ¬Å"hackers.â⬠The OED has ten entries for the word hack: five as a noun, four as a verb, and one as a combining form. The verb hack in the sense of ââ¬Å"to cut with heavy blowsâ⬠has been in the language since the early 13th century, but the use of hack in the context of computer programming dates from the 1970s. Note: Hack in the sense of ââ¬Å"to cope withâ⬠dates from 1955: ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t hack all this extra work.â⬠The etymology of the computer term hack is not certain. According to one theory, it derives from the noun hack used as tech slang for ââ¬Å"one who works like a hack at writing and experimenting with software, one who enjoys computer programming for its own sake. (OnlineEtymologyDictionary). The noun hacker does not carry a connotation of illegal activity in the following OED citations from 1976: The compulsive programmer, or hacker as he calls himself, is usually a superb technician. The compulsive programmer spends all the time he can working on one of his big projects. ââ¬ËWorkingââ¬â¢ is not the word he uses; he calls what he does ââ¬Ëhackingââ¬â¢. The earliest citation that associates the word hacking with illegal activity is dated 1983: Hacking, as the practice of gaining illegal or unauthorized access to other peoples computers is called. Because hack, hacker, and hacking have such varied connotations, writers should consider the intended audience when using them. In the programming community, hacker and hacking are good things, or at least neutral. Using an adjective to describe the bad kind might be useful when writing for programmers, for example, ââ¬Å"malicious hackingâ⬠or ââ¬Å"illegal hacking.â⬠As for the noun hack meaning ââ¬Å"tip,â⬠ââ¬Å"suggestion,â⬠or ââ¬Å"work-around,â⬠I expect the usage will become embedded in computer-speak. The trendy use of hack in the context of cooking, parenting, and other non-computer-related fields, however, will probably eventually revert to tip or suggestion. Wrongful Convictions - Death Penalty and Innocence Essay
Wrongful Convictions - Death Penalty and Innocence - Essay Example I would much rather risk the former. This, to me, is not a tough call." Professor John McAdams, Marquette University Law is one of the most intricate aspects of socio-political life; it revolves around the life of individuals and helps them coexist in tandem with one another. It is based on a philosophy as talked about by eminent thinkers and its very features emanate a sort of philosophical thinking on the basis of what law exactly is. Law generates human behaviour and is answerable for the actions of the people; it thus control and regulates the manner in which people exist around each other and thus, it poses an intellectual question as to how it carries out the same function. Within a society thus, if people commit crimes or harass others and intrude upon their peaceful living, they are bound to be punished, and since times immemorial, one of the worst punishments that a person may be given is a death penalty. The definition of the term death penalty is ââ¬Ëputting a condemned person to deathââ¬â¢. (Definition - Death Penalty). This means that if a person kills someone, in most cases, he himself will get sentenced to death. At the same time, it is pertinent to note that many countries around the world have abolished the charge of a death penalty to their citizens despite the heinous acts that they may commit. Other countries, for example, India, still make use of the death penalty in the rarest of rare cases. Current trends in the United States of America suggest that the death penalty is administered to people committing crimes ranging from drug trafficking to aggravated murder, and one of the most common forms of the execution involves the use of a lethal injection which has been opposed by numerous human rights groups. In 2011 itself, 43 executions have taken place with the lethal injection (Facts About Death Penalty). However, there are many states within the US, for example, Michigan, Hawaii, and Alaska, which have banned the death sentence altog ether. In America, there is acclaimed public support for death penalties as well because the people believe in truly punishing those that commit grave crimes like murders. Since the 1980s, this trend seems to be in the proposition of the public. Michigan was the first state with an English-speaking government that banned the death sentence for all crimes except for treason. Giving any individual the death penalty is a tough task to process because it involves pin pointing a certain crime onto a person that has shocked all of society; since the punishment depends on the gravity of the crime committed, it is pertinent to understand the reason for giving a death penalty in many parts of the world even today. However, according to personal opinion, the death penalty should only be reserved for the worst crimes and the rarest of rare cases because as discussed within this paper, it is difficult to segregate the innocent people from those that are indeed guilty and wrongfully giving the d eath penalty will result in creating many more criminals rather than fix the society. Causes of Wrongful Conviction Eyewitness error The memory of an individual may be either blurry or deceive him especially when it comes to remembering events that may have occurred in the past, especially with respect to other individuals. In the case of a rape and kidnapping, a man in Florida, Alan Crotzer, was wrongfully convicted to a long time in prison, awaiting a decision when he had not committed a crime at all, despite the eyewitnesses stating the facts as him being the criminal (Stutzman, R). According to the

Design the telecommunications network to support a new multi-location Essay
Design the telecommunications network to support a new multi-location practice - Essay Example The use of latest networking tools has transformed the overall world particularly business areas. At the present, organizations have much faster, accurate and enhanced ways for business and corporate management. This paper presents communication network specification for a Dental Office. In this scenario I will recommend a new network technology and data sharing method for better management of the corporate areas. Requirements for the Network I have presented below some of the requirements for new network technology implementation at corporation: Offering better communication services at corporation Establishment of effective data sharing environment Offering secure data access points for communication Establishment of better communication facility Offering remote access to network Offering remote data transfer and access mechanism Implementing new and enhanced data communication framework Offering better data safety and access points Implementing enhanced capability of data handling Developing better data handling mechanism Suitable data backup and recovery mechanism Superior data transfer speed Effective user management Tight security login and access methods Network Information and Data Need Security In this network establishment main sensitive data that we have is about the Dental Clinic clients (patients). This data needs to be secured for superior management and corporate security and privacy. This link of data can include: Patient name Patient address Patient content Patient financial details Patient medial details Patient medical history Patient personal and sensitive information Patient funds transfer information Besides we also have some of the important information regarding doctors and other clinic staff. In this scenario we have a lot of details regarding staff working and financial information that can be extremely sensitive: Staff Person name Staff Person address Staff Person content Staff Person financial details Staff Person job details Staff P erson working history Staff Person personal and sensitive information Staff Person salary and financial transfers details In addition, this new corporate network and database will also keep some sensitive information regarding Dental Clinic itself. I have outline below some of the important aspects that will be kept by network database for the business: Business financial information Business staff details Business tax details Business revenue information Business assistants details Business daily working schedule Network Specification For analyzing the needs and requirements of Dental Clinic business and operational capabilities required by corporation I would suggest a new and effective network arrangement for the business. For this network development, I would suggest the implementation of VPN (virtual private network). In this scenario, a virtual private network (VPN) is a network arrangement that makes use of a public telecommunication arrangement, like that internet, to offer remote offices or individual clients through protected access to their organization's communication network. In addition, the basic goal of a VPN is to offer the business the similar potentials however at a much lower cost

Recreation and Sports Essay Example for Free
Recreation and Sports Essay Fun-Spot Fun Park began as a small amusement park in 1985. Starting with nothing more than a merry-go-round, a slide, pony rides, and an ice cream stand, Fun-Spot has grown into a popular family attraction with 20 rides, a restaurant, and an outdoor performing arts theater. My wife, Lisa, and I didnt know what we were getting into, commented Peter Smith, the owner. We just knew that weekenders coming to the lakes in our village represented a potential un-served market. Today, thousands of visitors come to Fun-Spot: families, children of all ages, and even senior citizens who enjoy walking through the gardens and arbor. Theres something here for everyone, Peter said with a smile. Dozens of companies hold annual company picnics here. We have welcomed class field trips. And we even had one wedding here at the park! Heres the funny thing, Peter chimed in. We really dont know why weve been so successful! There is nothing else like Fun-Spot Fun Park in the area. We were just lucky. I think its the ambience of the park that has brought so many visitors, Lisa added. We provide a total package of entertainment. Plus, we try to change our rides and various attractions from time to time. Peter and Lisa admitted that making every visitor happy is a priority. That has always been our philosophy, they said. Like it says on the entrance to the park, Were here to make you happy! And weve always been able to deliver on that because weve never allowed ourselves to grow too big too quickly. Essay Questions: 1.How should Peter design a strategic plan for Fun-Spot ? 2.Explain how Peter can use the Product-Market Expansion Grid to plan for the expansion/future growth of Fun Spot?

The Breaking Point: Woolfââ¬â¢s Views on Stael Essay -- women writers
No person is capable of perfectly articulating Virginia Woolfââ¬â¢s opinions on certain matters. However, through the observation of her works one might be able to gather her thoughts and form a more accurate description of her ideals. A Room of Oneââ¬â¢s Own contains Woolfââ¬â¢s ideals dealing with women in the arts, especially those associated with liberal arts. In this piece Woolf always describes a lack of strong women writers for her research but does name a few she deems worthy. It seems odd that Woolf would overlook Germaine de Stael while researching women with literary talent. The reasons for why Stael was disregarded could range from a language barrier at the time, Staelââ¬â¢s ideals on how a woman should behave within society, political propaganda, or Staelââ¬â¢s works might have simply gone unnoticed at the time. If Woolf had read Staelââ¬â¢s, On Women Writers, surely she would have mentioned it somewhere in her novel. Why would it be required tha t Woolf write about Stael? To simply answer this question, Stael was an intelligent woman in her time and many of Woolfââ¬â¢s main arguments coincide with Staelââ¬â¢s. Gender Inequality is one of these major themes where Stael shares similar views. They would both agree that this inequality feeds the other motifs described in their own works, such as: the individuality of truth, the importance of monetary means, or the hatred and ridicule that society directs at women writers. Woolf might not have agreed with all of Staelââ¬â¢s beliefs, but she would find Staelââ¬â¢s views on gender inequality and the causes of these inequalities to contain the essential oil of truth she was desperately searching for. Gender Inequality was what Woolf emphasized as the major downfall of women writers and Stael shared thos... ... Both Woolf and Stael were extraordinary authors of their times, especially when one considers the hardships they faced. Woolf would indeed find much of her arguments written within Staelââ¬â¢s work. In her reading she would be pleased to find agreement with many of the arguments brought up by Stael, but of course she would not agree to them all. The pity Stael says women should be shown would not consist in Woolfââ¬â¢s vocabulary. She would insist that women be treated as equals instead of looked down upon and pitied. Two Ways of Seeing a River (1883)
This passage is excerpted from Mark Twainââ¬â¢s 1883 book Life on the Mississippi, in which he shares his experiences as a river steamboat pilot and explores the many facets of the great river. As you read, consider his masterful use of language as he reflects on his changing relationship with the river. Now when I had mastered the language of this water and had come to know every trifling feature that bordered the great river as familiarly as I knew the letters of the alphabet, I had made a valuable acquisition. But I had lost something, too. I had lost something which could never be restored to me while I lived. All the grace, the beauty, the poetry, had gone out of the majestic river! I still kept in mind a certain wonderful sunset which I witnessed when steamboating was new to me. A broad expanse of the river was turned to blood; in the middle distance the red hue brightened into gold, through which a solitary log came floating, black and conspicuous; in one place a long, slanting mark lay sparkling upon the water; in another the surface was broken by boiling, tumbling rings that were as many-tinted as an opal; where the ruddy flush was faintest was a smooth spot that was covered with graceful circles and radiating lines, ever so delicately traced; the shore on our left was densely wooded, and the somber shadow that fell from this forest was broken in one place by a long, ruffled trail that shone like silver; and high above the forest wall a clean-stemmed dead tree waved a single leafy bough that glowed like a flame in the unobstructed splendor that was flowing from the sun. There were graceful curves, reflected images, woody heights, soft distances, and over the whole scene, far and near, the dissolving lights drifted steadily, enriching it every passing moment with new marvels of coloring. I stood like one bewitched. I drank it in, in a speechless rapture. The world was new to me and I had never seen anything like this at home. But as I have said, a day came when I began to cease from noting the glories and the charms which the moon and the sun and the twilight wrought upon the riverââ¬â¢s face; another day came when I ceased altogether to note them. Then, if that sunset scene had been repeated, I should have looked upon it without rapture and should have commented upon it inwardly after this fashion: ââ¬Å"This sun means that we re going to have wind tomorrow; that floating log means that the river is rising, small thanks to it; that slanting mark on the water refers to a bluff reef which is going to kill somebodyââ¬â¢s steamboat one of these nights, if it keeps on stretching out like that; those tumbling ââ¬Ëboilsââ¬â¢ show a dissolving bar and a changing channel there; the lines and circles in the slick water over yonder are a warning that that troublesome place is shoaling up dangerously; that silver streak in the shadow of the forest is the ââ¬Ëbreakââ¬â¢ from a new snag and he has located himself in the very best place he could have found to fish for steamboats; that tall dead tree, with a single living. Two Ways of Seeing a River ranch, is not going to last long, and then how is a body ever going to get through this blind place at night without the friendly old landmark? â⬠No, the romance and beauty were all gone from the river. All the value any feature of it had for me now was the amount of usefulness it could furnish toward compassing the safe piloting of a steamboat. Since those days, I have pitied doctors from my heart. What does the lovely flush in a beautyââ¬â¢s cheek mean to a doctor but a ââ¬Å"breakâ⬠that ripples above some deadly disease? Are not all her visible charms sown thick with what are to him the signs and symbols of hidden decay? Does he ever see her beauty at all, or doesnââ¬â¢t he simply view her professionally and comment upon her unwholesome condition all to himself? And doesnââ¬â¢t he sometimes wonder whether he has gained most or lost most by learning his trade? 1. What is Twainââ¬â¢s argument here? What is his claim? What are his reasons? How does he construct his essay to help the reader be persuaded by his claim? How does he draw connections between the ideas in the first two paragraphs and those in the third? 2. What is the purpose of Twainââ¬â¢s argument? To explore? Inform? Convince? Meditate or pray? Something else? 3. Twain is known for his beautiful, rich use of language. Find the phrases or images that are the most powerful to you. What tools of stylish language are he using? How do they help make his argument persuasive?

I Just Wanted to Know About the Present Trends in Housekeeping Department
PRESENT TRENDS IN HOUSKEEPING DEPARTMENT Accommodation Management Staffing The housekeeping department of a hotel is responsible for ââ¬Ëcleanliness, maintenance, aesthetic upkeep of rooms, public areas, back areas and surroundings. ââ¬â¢ The department is not always given the respect it is due in terms of work load, the size of which can be estimated by the fact the department often employs the largest workforce. There are a variety of areas the housekeeping department must manage, the following table taken from Hotel Housekeeping Operations and Management depicts the housekeeping departmentââ¬â¢s span of control: Front of House Areas Back of House Areas â⬠¢ Guestrooms â⬠¢ Corridors â⬠¢ Lobbies and public restrooms â⬠¢ Pool and patio areas â⬠¢ Meeting rooms â⬠¢ Dining rooms/restaurants â⬠¢ Banquet halls â⬠¢ Convention Halls â⬠¢ Hotel-operated shops â⬠¢ Games rooms / recreation rooms â⬠¢ Exercise rooms / gymnasium â⬠¢ Building e xterior â⬠¢ Landscaping and gardens â⬠¢ Management offices Storage areas â⬠¢ Linen and sewing rooms â⬠¢ Laundry room â⬠¢ Employee locker rooms â⬠¢ Administrative offices â⬠¢ Cloak rooms â⬠¢ Maidââ¬â¢s service room The diversity of areas controlled by the housekeeping department requires structured planning when delegating tasks to be undertaken. Top Ten Words Confused Words [Q-R]
Top Ten Words Confused Words [Q-R] Top Ten Words Confused Words [Q-R] Top Ten Words Confused Words [Q-R] By Maeve Maddox My cumulative list of ââ¬Å"words commonly confusedâ⬠continues with ten that begin with the letters Q and R. The confusion relates to spelling or meaning. 1. quote / quotation Traditionally, quote is a verb and quotation is a noun: May I quote you on that? (verb) I used a quotation from Dr. Johnson as an epigraph. (noun) The Chicago Manual of Style includes a note on these words in the ââ¬Å"Good usage versus common usage section,â⬠apparently preferring to preserve the distinction in formal writing. The CMS note also suggests that a difference may exist in the minds of some writers between quote as a noun and quotation as a noun: quotes: contemporary remarks usable in their writing. quotations: wisdom of the ages expressed pithily. 2. quiet / quite This is a spelling problem for speakers who arenââ¬â¢t in the habit of looking closely at words. Quiet functions as noun, adjective, and verb: In the old days, librarians insisted on absolute quiet from the patrons. (noun) Parents often worry when their children are excessively quiet. (adjective) Susan is known as the quiet sister. (adjective) Please do something to quiet that barking dog. (verb) The most common use of quite is as a synonym for the adverb very: They say that Bill Gates is quite rich. (adverb) 3. reign / rein The noun reign refers to the period of rule of a monarch. The verb reign means to exercise sovereign power or authority. The noun rein refers to a strap, usually of leather, that is used to control a horse. The verb rein means to control a horse. Figuratively, rein means to put a restraint on something. For example, ââ¬Å"to reinâ⬠or ââ¬Å"rein inâ⬠oneââ¬â¢s impulses. The most common confusion between these words is with the idiom ââ¬Å"free rein.â⬠The figurative expression derives from horseback riding. To give a horse ââ¬Å"free reinâ⬠is to hold the reins loosely and allow the horse a certain amount of free movement. 4. raise / raze The verb raise has many meanings, but the meaning in contrast to raze is ââ¬Å"build upâ⬠or ââ¬Å"construct.â⬠The pioneer raised a rudimentary cabin to house his family.â⬠The verb raze means ââ¬Å"tear downâ⬠or ââ¬Å"destroy.â⬠ââ¬Å"The historic opera house was razed to make room for a parking deck.â⬠5. real / really Common in colloquial speech, real is often substituted for the intensifying adverb really. The adjective real means ââ¬Å"actually existing, not imaginary.â⬠This is a real denarius from Roman times. Used as an intensifier, really means very, or thoroughly. Casablanca is a really memorable movie. 6. rebate / refund A rebate is a discount collectible after a purchase. I paid $50 for the headphones, but the rebate was $10, so the final cost was $40. A refund is the full amount of a purchase returned to a customer. The spaghetti-maker didnââ¬â¢t work, so I asked for a refund. 7. regardless / irregardless The adverb regardless means ââ¬Å"without regard to.â⬠Charles intends to buy a herd of llamas, regardless of my objections. The soldier tackled the bomber, regardless of his own safety. Nonstandard irregardless is used by some speakers as either a deliberately humorous portmanteau word or a confused collision of regardless and irrespective. Hereââ¬â¢s a serious use of the word from a community non-profit agency in New Jersey: Schools walk a delicate balance. Some schools that have tried to discipline a student for cyberbullying actions that took place off-campus and outside of school hours have been sued for exceeding their authority and violating the studentââ¬â¢s free speech right. Irregardless, parents should inform the school if they become aware of any cyberbullying issue. 8. restive / restful Both words are adjectives. Restive means unsettled, restless. Ex. ââ¬Å"Speaking softly, Nancy calmed the restive horse.â⬠Restful means ââ¬Å"full of rest.â⬠Anything that bestows a feeling of calm and invites relaxation is restful. ââ¬Å"Beethovenââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËMoonlight Sonataââ¬â¢ is a restful piece.â⬠9. retch / wretch The verb retch may be defined as ââ¬Å"vomiting or trying to.â⬠ââ¬Å"She retched driblets of green bile.â⬠ââ¬Å"The smell of the Dumpster caused him to retch.â⬠Wretch is a noun. It can mean ââ¬Å"a pitiable personâ⬠or ââ¬Å"a vile person.â⬠ââ¬Å"The poor wretch has lost all in the fire.â⬠ââ¬Å"Anyone who would deliberately profit from anotherââ¬â¢s illness is a miserable, rotten wretch.â⬠10. rise / raise Used as verbs, rise and raise are often misused. Rise is intransitive. Ex. Here comes the Judge; all rise! The candidate says those things in the hope that his poll numbers will rise. Raise is transitive. It takes an object. Ex. Let us raise a toast to departed friends. Does anyone wish to raise a question? Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? DEVELOP A MARKETING PLAN Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
DEVELOP A MARKETING PLAN - Essay Example However, the entrance of smaller companies that offer the same diversity in design and high class quality is forcing to reinvent itself. This paper will explore the marketing opportunities it can tap in order to reinvent its image to a flexible label that is essential to every fashion genre. Situation Analysis Internal Environment One word. Thatââ¬â¢s all it takes for a person to know someone inside and out, its history, its sensibilities, its personality, and its relationships. That word is the brand name. Coca-Cola. iPod. Nike. Google. Their identities are so strong and so embedded to the minds of the consumers that no single study, perhaps not even a compound of a thousand, can comprehensively explain how each company built it. Cotton On, despite being a young label, has experienced a certain amount of success in positioning themselves in the market and securing a loyal consumer base who identifies them with the same laidback, simple, and organic image of the country where it o riginated from, Australia. It is, despite possible apprehension of the fashion elite a brand that exudes style. It started in 1991 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Twenty years is considered young in the fashion retail business. Yet, it has expanded to more than 600, employing more than 4,500 people in the same countries where it distributes - Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the US. Its success may be credited to the same formula that casual brands like Roxy and Target has (Grail, 2009). It has managed to become an accessible brand but its lines were never tacky or common. By not emphasizing its affordability and flaunting its quality in both engineering and aesthetics have allowed it to develop a stylish image that cuts across all segments age, gender, and social class. External Environment The cards the Australian fashion industry has are not good ones. It seems easier to fold than to call it. The geography itself is a disadvantage of epic proportion. It is more than 20 hours away by plane from all of the major fashion capitals such as Paris, London, and New York. The time difference also means contradicting weather. When itââ¬â¢s summer in Australia, it is winter in Paris. To any fashion expert, thatââ¬â¢s a recipe for disaster. The international economic crisis also damaged the value of the Australian, from 53 to 106 Australian cents to the US dollar.
